Schönhof-Viertel

The international design competition for an area of the Schondorf district in the west of Frankfurt, aims to create two mixed-use urban blocks and a central public space defining the core of a new residential development area.

The two blocks, conceived conceptually as a continuous element, are separated from the public space, modeling themselves plastically according to the functional needs of the interior spaces.

The functional layout is designed by creating a horizontal stratification of uses without renouncing the vertical intersection of the flows between the different levels.

The typological choice of the court building allows the clear hierarchization of public and private spaces, the possibility of looking at the surrounding landscape from privileged points of view and the permanence of an intimate and private atmosphere of the individual housing units.

The project identifies specific functions within the north and south blocks in continuity with the directives expressed in the competition. In the first one an elementary school for about 300 students and social housing; in the second one a commercial area of 7000 square meters, a nursery, medical offices and apartments.
